'Mystery Wailer' Cherry 'Smith' Green
Singer Cherry 'Smith' Green, dubbed the "Mystery Wailer" by no lesser authority than Bunny Wailer, has gone to join the other departed members of the most famous reggae group ever.
Cherry Smith - as she is better known, on September 24 - joined those now regrouping in the great beyond - Bob Marley, Junior Brathwaite and drummer Carlton Barrett. The 65-year-old singer died of an heart attack in Miami Florida.
Her place in Jamaica's musical history, is that of one of two female members of the Wailers. The other female member was Beverley Kelso. Cherry Smith was arguably the least known member of the Wailers, but there was a mysticism of some sort that shrouded her career, so much so, that noted reggae historian Roger Steffens observered that "Her role in the Wailers' history has gone largely unnoticed".
To begin with, there is a measure of confusion surrounding her real name which Steffens explored in a 2003 interview. Small wonder, however, Bunny Wailer refers to her as the "Mystery Wailer".
In an intresting, authorative perspective of the late female singer on his Wailers Legacy box set Musically Speaking (Untold History of the Legendary Wailers), Bunny Wailer declares "The Mystery Wailer Cherry. read more about this mystery Wailer Cherry in Old Fire Sticks." The Old Fire Sticks, of which Bunny Wailer speaks, is his yet-to-be-published autobiography.
As his narrative on Musically Speaking continues, Bunny Wailer points out: "Bratty (Junior Brathwaite) was a very important loss to the group which made it quite difficult to cope with... This was a challenge which meant hard work and sticking together now that a key link was missing, proved to be a strenuous and bewildering task... and after a few other recording sessions, we decided to adopt Cherry who had been interested in being a member since the absence of Junior Brathwaite.
"After doing so, she officially rehearsed with the group, still tutored by Joe (Higgs) who by this time was like a father figure for us, and we totally relied on his unreluctant attitude towards us. Jah bless Joe Higgs everytime. Our next recording session including Cherry, was pre-arranged by Coxsone to revolutionise the Wailers' sound a bit. So the Vikings Band was chosen for this one. This session proved fruitful for Coxsone. Because out of it came three smashing hits. The Wailers' Lonesome Feelings, the Vikings' instrumental Sirus and Higgs and Wilson's There's A Reward For Me. Cherry was not the ideal replacement, so after putting in some more hard rehearsals and recording a few more tracks, Cherry understandably resigned from the group."
