It was a show of disrespect to a pioneering artiste that the funeral service for gospel singer Adina Edwards, held yesterday at Hagley Park Seventh-Day Adventist Church, was so poorly attended.
The rows and rows of empty seats were its own testimony of the scant regard paid to a woman who was a stalwart in gospel music.
She ruled in the '60s and '70s, performing to huge crowds as she belted out gospel songs while playing her accordion. It was a blatant statement from the entity where support was seen from the most - the gospel fraternity.
With songs such as Precious Lord, Just A Closer Walk With Thee, Love Walks With Me and He Touched Me, Adina endeared herself into the hearts of many gospel lovers. But it was her Bee Gees cover Don't Forget To Remember that many will remember.
Among those who took part in the funeral proceedings were Clyde McKenzie, Andrew Lawrence, Dean Frazer, Carlene Davis and Tommy Cowan.
Adina Edwards, who died at the University Hospital of the West Indies on Friday, April 4, at the age of 83, has left behind six children - one son and five daughters. She was laid to rest at the Dovecot Memorial Park.
