Indirectly it is almost a form of legalized extortion, you have to pay a third party if you want to conduct business. You can also say it is like paying rent to a landlord, except the landlord does not own the property in which you are conducting your business, only the license to conduct such a business at that location.
In the end, a lot of these folks work 70 or 80 hours a week and end up making very little. The only upside is they are working for themselves.
