Got kids? You're more likely to cheat! Having children is main reason to commit adultery for 82 per cent of male cheaters
Most new parents will agree that despite the joy they bring, having children can be stressful.
Lack of sleep, financial pressure and a shift in family dynamics are all troubles that many experience and overcome with a new baby, but it seems for some, this stress can radiate into their romantic relationship, resulting in men becoming more likely to stray.
A survey of more than 5,000 cheating men reveals that 78 per cent of the respondents are in their first marriage, and that 82 per cent of them began to be unfaithful after having children.
The most common reason men gave (30 per cent) for their infidelity was that sex with their partner stopped being passionate after the baby came.
Nearly a quarter (23 per cent) tried to use the excuse that the lack of sleep commonly experienced by parents of young children had led to problems in the bedroom which had caused them to stray.
Along a similar vein, 18 per cent stated that their spouse turned all of their attention to the children and this lack of attention led to their infidelity.
Other unfaithful men (15 per cent) cited economic problems as the source of their marital woes while a further 14 per cent indicated that other family issues were the cause of their problems.
Only 22 per cent of the 5,000 cheating respondents were remarried, and the results might seem to indicate that being married to your first partner increases the desire to be unfaithful.
Sigurd Vedal, CEO of Victoria Milan, who conducted the research, says: 'Generally, second relationships, whether they be marriages or other committed relationships, are usually stronger because past experience has served both to correct behaviours and provide a more mature attitude towards relationships.
'It is also more common for problems arising from parenthood to happen in the first relationship - this is a function of both age and experience.'
