State Senator Virgil Smith was back in court Friday for a probable cause hearing.Smith is charged with assaulting a woman, his ex-wife and girlfriend, after a party on May 10. He was arrested for assaulting her and firing rifle shots at her 2015 Mercedes Benz. She was not injured in the incident, but the car was damaged by the shots.
Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy charged Smith with felonious assault, malicious destruction of property $20,000 or more, domestic violence assault and battery and felony firearm."The alleged actions of Senator Smith cannot and will not be tolerated," Worthy said. "We asked for further work on the warrant and the information was received this morning. We let the facts and evidence guide our charging decision and nothing else."
