John Mark Karr's Fiance Talks: Part One
She's young, slim and pretty. Brooke Simmons could have her pick of would-be boyfriends. Amazingly though, the 23-year-old plans to marry one of the most reviled men in America...John Mark Karr.
Simmons describes Karr as "very sensitive and very romantic." Karr, of course, made international headlines when he claimed to have been with Jon Benet Ramsey the night she was murdered. He was brought back from Thailand, where he was teaching, to face questioning by U.S. authorities. However, DNA showed he'd had nothing to do with Jon Benet's death. After following Karr's case on TV, divorcee Brooke Simmons wrote a compassionate note to his family.
"I felt for him as a person, I felt for his family. I felt like I should send that card to them that you're in someone's thoughts and prayers," Simmons tells INSIDE EDITION.
In response, Karr says, "It was very heartfelt and genuine and I did just want to call and say 'Thank you,' but we ended up speaking for about four hours."
It was then that the two agreed to meet, then began dating.
Simmons says that when she first met Karr she told him, "I'm not here for anything, I don't want to ask you any questions, I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable, but I have gone through a difficult time in my life as well."
Originally from Louisiana, Brooke later moved in with Karr at his family's home in Atlanta. Making the match even more puzzling, Simmons has a 3-year-old daughter of her own. She refuses to talk about the child with INSIDE EDITION, but is forthcoming about her other loves ones and their views on Karr. "This is something that's very tough. Not very good. I'm sorry for that, and I love them."
When INSIDE EDITION broached the biggest question of all, why John?, Simmons responded, saying, "It just happened. Honestly, I wasn't looking for another person...I got involved with him, our friendship developed more. I care for him, he's human, he has feelings, we all do." Simmons says it's how it happened that still leaves even she puzzled. "I sit back every day and think...how did this happen? And, I don't know. I don't have an answer for it. I try to come up with an answer for it...I don't know."
When INSIDE EDITION met up with Simmons and Karr they seemed to fit the part of most engaged couples. They held hands and exchanged in sharing sweet nothings with each other. But, things haven't always been so love-dovey between the two.
Karr landed in court earlier this year, the result of an argument with Simmons at their home. A neighbor called 911, and described the scene, saying it seemed like something "domestic." The caller said there was a girl crying and "loud voices...yelling at each other." The police report from that incident suggested Simmons had packed her bags, but the 23-year-old was back at her fiance's side when he appeared before the judge. Karr was told the case would be dismissed if he went to counseling, and the couple brushed it off.
INSIDE EDITION also spoke with Simmons about the incident that landed Karr in the headlines in the first place...his bombshell Jon Benet confession. She says she has asked John questions about the case, but she would not speculate as to whether he had any involvement or not. "I'm not saying he's innocent. I'm not saying he's guilty. We are all sinners, but that's between us and God."
