LOS ANGELES -- General Growth Properties Inc., the owner of four major malls in metro Atlanta <span style="font-weight: bold">and the nation's second-largest mall operator, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy </span>protection early Thursday after it failed to persuade a majority of its debt holders to give it more time to refinance billions of dollars in debt racked up during the housing boom.
According to the company's Web site, it owns Cumberland, North Point, Perimeter and Southlake malls in metro Atlanta. It also owns four other malls in Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah.
