MIAMI, FL, U.S.A. - The 2006 Caribbean Woman Writer as Scholar Conference themed "Imaging, Theorizing and Creating" will be held next week starting on Tuesday, May 30 to June 3 at the Westin Diplomat Conference Center in Hollywood, Florida.
Over the five days of the conference, writers from all over the Caribbean Diaspora including Brazil, Haiti, Trinidad and Puerto Rico will convene to discuss and debate rarely explored Caribbean cultural gender discourses. The conference program includes more than 28 diverse panels with titles such as "Revolutionizing the Feminine, Embracing the Root" to "The Creative/Theoretical Beyond Lo Real Maravilloso."
"What is transformative about this gathering is it's the only conference of its kind and the impact on participants is always pure inspiration and greater understanding of our experiences as women, as writers and most importantly as scholars," said Carole Boyce Davies, Professor and Chairperson of the African New World Studies at F.I.U.
A small sampling of presenters at the conference includes: Erna Brodber from Jamaica, keynote speaker; Edwidge Danticat from Haiti, one of the distinguished host writers; and Angie Cruz from the Dominican Republic. Recognized writers of children's literature will also be participating including Merle Hodge, Eintou Pearl Springer, Joan Hyppolyte and Lissette Norman and a special guest appearance by Singing Sandra, last year's calypso monarch of Trinidad and Tobago.
Nightly receptions and readings by writers will follow the days' events, especially noteworthy is the opening of the art exhibition "Les Porteuses/The Carriers" on the theme of the conference by Haitian woman artist, Herza Barjon.
The event is appropriate for all teachers, writers and genres and more than two hundred and fifty writers scholars are expected to attend. In the evenings, all are welcomed to attend evening poetry readings, cocktail receptions, spoken word sessions and performance pieces. Five nights of creative celebration will be held throughout the Hollywood area.
