Confirmed : JTA could drag Gov ' t to court for retroactive salaries ( RJR )...
The Bruce Golding administration could face legal troubles following its failure to abide by a ruling from the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) for the payment of retroactive salaries to more than 20,000 public sector teachers. At a meeting of the JTA's General Council on the weekend, the members mandated the Association to seek legal advice on the Government disobeying the Tribunal's ruling for the disbursement of $500 million, which is owed to the teachers. The members say this will send a strong signal to the Government that the teachers are far from happy with its handling of the wage dispute.Retroactive salaries should have been paid this month in keeping with the IDT ruling. However the Government said it was not in a position to meet the schedule. It has since indicated that payment will be made next month.JTA President, Nadine Molloy, told RJR News the Government should be sanctioned for breaching the IDT ruling."As we see it, if we had breached an IDT ruling, we would have been sanctioned by the court, quite likely we would have been hauled before the court. We are now looking to see how we can hold the government accountable for having breached an IDT. We are going to seek to see if we can take some legal action to hold the government accountable," Ms. Molloy said. The Association has written to the International Labour Organization and Education International complaining of the treatment meted out to its members by the Government.
