Confirmed : Jamaican beef patties detained in St . Lucia ( RJR )...
A shipment of Jamaican beef patties was detained earlier this week in St. Lucia amidst concerns of the use of beef from the United States. The matter came to the attention of Industry Minister Karl Samuda, who was in Guyana for the 31st CARICOM Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) Meeting. Following intense discussions with his St. Lucian counterpart, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs, Charlotte Mangal, and the Chief Veterinary Officers in both member states, the matter was amicably resolved with the release of the patties into the St. Lucian market. In addressing the COTED meeting on Wednesday, Mr. Samuda said he was disappointed that this issue had again surfaced. He emphasised that the region needs to ensure that it is operating on the principles of mutual respect.Last year, there was a stalemate between the government and Trinidad and Tobago over a shipment of patties which was delayed on the wharves there for weeks. That issue was resolved only after Prime Ministerial intervention on both sides.
