The government could be forced to pay for commitments made by its ministries and agencies for Christmas parties which have to be cancelled.The cash strapped administration issued a directive, based on a Cabinet decision, which placed a ban on the usual round of social activities for the holidays.According to State Minister in the Finance Ministry Senator Arthur Williams some agencies were unaware of the directive and had already incurred costs.Senator Williams says the government will try to recoup where possible."I am willing to concede that the notice was circulated very late. Some of the Permanent Secretaries were aware of the provisions, some were not,""But we expect some of the agencies will seek to recover as much money as possible, if there are minor losses we would have to absorb that, clearly," Senator Williams said.The government's has earned the ire of at least two trade unionists.Bustamante Industrial Trade Union President General Kavon Gayle has blasted the Bank of Jamaica and the government for the circumstances, which led to a hasty cancellation of the central bank's Christmas party last Friday.And President of the University and Allied Workers Union Lambert Brown has also flayed the government for the way the directive was communicated.
