The Road Safety Unit is appealing to Jamaicans to report instances of road traffic violations to the police as part of efforts to reduce crashes and fatalities. Director of the Unit Kanute Hare says persons should see it as their personal responsibility to play an integral role in ensuring a safe environment. According to Hare, there are far too many cases of reckless driving and other violations of the road code. Since the start of the year 285 people have been killed in 262 crashes in Jamaica. Hare says the traffic crashes have resulted serious economic pressure on the government as well as families. He says the health ministry has spent more than two billion dollars to provide treatment to persons injured in crashes, while families have spent more than $150 million to bury loved ones.
