One thousand, one hundred and eleven surgeries have been successfully completed at the Jamaica/Cuba Ophthalmology Centre since March this year, with no reports of complications. The figures were revealed by Health Minister, Ruddy Spencer, during a visit to the National Chest Hospital by Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla on Monday.Mr. Spencer says since the Centre opened its doors five years ago, 4,037 persons have been screened.He adds that the partnership with Cuba to provide eye care services has resulted in a reduction in the number of Jamaicans needing to seek treatment for eye disorders at public hospitals.In 2003, 25,540 Jamaicans visited health centres for eye disorders.By 2007, the number was reduced by more than a half, to 11,618. Meanwhile, Mr. Parrilla, says the eye centre is an expression of how small countries can work together in unity, for the best Latin American and Caribbean integration.The Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister is on an official visit to Jamaica.
