Four more cholera cases have been registered in the Dominican Republic, raising the total number of cases in the Caribbean country to 32, the Public Health Ministry said. The latest cases involve a 63-year-old woman, a 13-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 49-year-old man, the ministry said, adding that all of the patients are "stable and in good condition."The new cholera cases were registered in the northern province of Santiago and in Elias Piña and Dajabon provinces, both of which are on the border with Haiti.Prevention and monitoring efforts have been expanded across the country, focusing on Santiago and Elias Piña, the two provinces reporting the most cholera cases, the Public Health Ministry said.Health officials have called on Dominicans to take measures to prevent the spread of the disease.Over the weekend, health officials said a 49-year-old man who had cholera symptoms died in the northwestern city of Dajabon and tests were being performed to determine whether the death was due to the disease.Elpidio Tapia was admitted on Dec. 5 with a severe case of diarrhea to Matias Ramon Mella Hospital in Dajabon province.Tapia had symptoms of cholera, but hours before he died he was found to have chronic malaria, epidemiologist Puro Felix said.If cholera is confirmed as the cause of death, Tapia will be the first fatality from the disease in the Dominican Republic.Tapia had been working on a farm with several Haitians in Santiago de la Cruz, a community in the city of Loma de Cabrera, located on the Haitian border, when he felt severe stomach pains and had diarrhea.More than 2,000 people have died from cholera in neighboring Haiti, where over 90,000 other people have been infected.Haiti is dealing with the cholera epidemic as it struggles to recover from the Jan. 12 earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people and left 1 million homeless.
