Meat producer, Caribbean Broilers, says the price of its chicken and other meat products will go up early in the new year. Dr. Keith Amiel, Corporate Affairs Manager at Caribbean Broilers, says continued increases in the price of corn, which account for 65% of the cost of meats like chicken and pork, will push those prices up.Dr. Amiel says the company has been buying corn for use in January, at higher prices than the last time the commodity was bought. He says the magnitude of the increase means the company will not be able to hold the price of meat too far into the new year. However, he adds that the price of chicken and ham will remain stable over the Christmas holiday, before the more expensive corn starts to influence higher prices, in late January to early February. Meanwhile Christopher Levy, Chief Executive Officer at Jamaica Broilers, says if there are changes in the price of chicken supplied by his company in January, they should not be major.
