With only thirteen days left to the end of 2010, a call is being made for motorists to adhere to better driving habits. Director of the National Road safety Unit Kenute Hare who made the appeal says the unit is concerned about the growing number of road deaths being reported. Up to December 17, 288 persons have been killed on the roads. Hare said this will undoubtedly affect the units drive to keep the number of road deaths below 300 this year. Hare has called on all Jamaicans to help in stemming the tide of crashes islandwide. He has also advised that the police's effort has been boosted with the deployment of 50 additional radar guns as part of an intensified speed reduction campaign on the nation's roads. He said that within the corporate area, roads such as the Sir Florizel Glaspole Boulevard, Spanish Town road, Palisadoes road, and the highway 2000, the Spanish Town and Linstead Bypas, Old Harbour main road, Helshire main road and West Henderson main road will be targeted. Persons attending entertainment facilities will also undergo breathalyser testing as a means of minimising road crashes.
