Hopes that the number of road fatalities this year would have remained below the 300 mark have been dashed. The number of persons killed in traffic accidents since the start of the year hit the 300 mark on Tuesday after the police presented new data to the National Road Safety Council.Vice-Chair of the Council, Dr. Lucien Jones, explained that a number of unrecorded deaths helped to push up the tally."One of the problems is that even though the figure was 295 a day ago, a number of people died in hospital, those were not recorded and that data came in as well as two people yesterday [Tuesday] but when you compare the 300 with 334 last year, you can appreciate the kind of success we had in absolute terms but in terms of the target we will try again next year and I think we will succeed," Dr. Jones said.He says the death toll from traffic accidents is now expected to be in the region of 310 this year.In 2009, 334 persons were killed on the island's roads. Confirmed: OGNR has obtained photographs of a Hiace Bus crash along the Portmore leg of Highway 2000 entering the port of Kingston; so far there has so been no reports of any fatalities.
