Four of the eight policemen accused of refusing to co-operate with the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) in its probe of the shooting death of a man and a teenager in Spanish Town, St Catherine, have been formally served with notices, demanding that they come forward and give statements. The notices were served on Wednesday.The policemen have been instructed to visit the offices of INDECOM on January 3, to give their statements on the events which led to the killing of 16-year old Derrick Bolton and Rohan Dixon in Tredegar Park, Spanish Town in August.The policemen were also informed that they will be required to attend a video identification parade. Cops won't give any statements - ChampagnieHowever the policemen's attorney, Peter Champagnie told RJR News that his clients will not be giving any statements to INDECOM as they are being treated as suspects."The rule of law is that someone who is being treated as a suspect is not obliged to answer any questions or give any statements and for all intent and purposes, my clients are being treated as suspects. They are to face identification parades and in those circumstances, we are sticking to the position that we're not going to be giving any statements and that is in the (INDECOM) Act," Mr. Champagnie said.He also denied claims that his clients have been charged.According to Mr. Champagnie, no charges have been laid against the men.Last week, the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that the cops should be charged for breaches of the INDECOM Act because of their refusal to co-operate with investigators probing the August 13 death of the 16-year-old and Mr. Dixon.The teenager, a resident of Thompson Pen, in Spanish Town, was fatally shot by members of a police party who were in hot pursuit of suspects involved in the shooting death of eight people in Tredegar Park.
