Dolphin Doeman, superintendent in charge of the St James Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, ruled out the possibility that the devastating fire may have been sparked by an electrical short circuit.Scenes at the Mount Carey Baptist Church in St James which was ravaged by fire yesterday morning."It is a suspicion that it may have been an act of arson," Superintendent Doeman said.He further disclosed that 20 firefighters who responded to the call about 2:30 am used three units to bring the blaze under control, before carrying out cooling-down operations.Doeman, who also disclosed that the building was insured, was however unable to provide an estimate of the damage. But he noted that "the loss will be significant".Charles Hall, moderator for the Mount Carey Baptist Circuit, disclosed that among the items destroyed in the historic church was an organ bought recently at a cost of $3 million.The church was established nearly 200 years ago, but was reconstructed in 1965 after being devastated by an earthquake in 1957.Nearly two years ago, a crowd similar in size converged on the grounds of the church when the Reverend Dr George Simpson was shot and injured by thugs who pounced upon him while he was at the church manse where he was living.The clergyman was absent yesterday, having left the island at the end of last month for further medical treatment in the USA.Members of the church yesterday said that recently there have been instances of persons being robbed after leaving church meetings and services at nights.Among the group of persons who visited the scene yesterday morning was Councillor Homer Davis (JLP, Cambridge Division) who pledged support for any rebuilding effort.Davis rued the destruction of the church, noting that he had intended to join the congregation for service this Sunday."It is a tragedy and it is a very, very dark day in the community of Mount Carey and, by extension, St James and Jamaica, because this Mount Carey Baptist Church which all have heard and read about is one of the beacons for the Baptists in St James," he lamented.http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...66848943358335
