THE Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has launched an investigation into the cause of a mysterious fire, which burnt one of its buses to a shell in downtown Kingston on Sunday night. The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 while the vehicle was parked at South Parade. "The driver had just let off all his passengers at North Parade, and in less than two minutes within which time he drove to South Parade, he noticed fire coming from the rear of the bus," JUTC Communications Manager Reginald Allen told the Observer yesterday.Allen said that the driver tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but failed. It took firefighters more than an hour to bring the blaze under control, onlookers said. While the cause of the fire was not established up to late yesterday afternoon, Allen said the incident raises concerns regarding the safety of JUTC buses in that area. "There is no clear indication as to what started the fire but mechanical fires do not start inside the buses," Allen said. "This is not the first an incident like this one has occurred in the area, and although we don't want to speculate as to how it started we are concerned about the coincident and possibilities of the fire," he continued, adding that such mysterious fires usually occur in the late evenings and on the older buses, which are not fitted with security cameras. In September, police linked the torching of another JUTC bus, similar to the one which caught fire Sunday night, to the controversial police killing of 40-year-old taxi operator Leroy Berry, that month. That incident occurred at nearby West Parade.Several other buses were damaged after being stoned by persons protesting Berry's death. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fb...67870549922841
