A demolition exercise is to be carried out on illegal settlements located on lands known as Dump, adjacent to the multi-billion dollar Falmouth Port Project in Trelawny. The Ministry of Housing, which is conducting the exercise, says the Dump lands are to be used as part of the Port Project. It says efforts to relocate the illegal occupants have been ongoing for several years.Eviction notices were issued in May last year advising the 114 householders to relocate to individual residential lots that have been allocated to them at Hague in Trelawny. However, the notices, for the most part, have been ignored as only 30 of the 114 households have so far complied with the relocation requirement. The Housing Ministry says this has resulted in its plan to evict the occupants and demolish the illegal structures in order to facilitate the completion and opening of the Falmouth Cruise Ship Pier. The Ministry says the relocation site at Hague is supplied with potable water and construction of the electrical infrastructure is now underway. In addition, the Ministry says each household has been paid $45,000 to assist in the relocation process.
