A MAN police intelligence has linked to the guns and ammunition seized in an operation in Montego Bay, St James, on Tuesday, was nabbed at the Sangster International Airport later in the day as he reportedly tried to flee the island. The man, whose identity is being withheld pending further investiga-tions, was in custody at the Freeport Police Station yesterday."He was held at airport, trying to leave the island," said Senior Superintendent Linette Williams-Martin, the commanding officer for the St James Police Division."While he has not been charged, we consider him a person of major interest."The early-morning operation, carried out by members of the St James Flying Squad and their colleagues from the Mobile Reserve, netted four high-powered guns, more than 1,000 rounds of assorted ammunition, three ballistic vests and a ballistic helmet as well as a number of other items.Three men from the Green Pond community, considered persons of interest in connection with the seized items, were taken into custody during the operation."Those three men are still in custody and are being questioned," said Williams-Martin. "They, too, have not been charged."During the operation, which started shortly after 6:30 a.m., the police seized a .22 rifle, a Browning 12-gauge shotgun, an Uzi sub-machine gun and an AK-47 assault rifle. The ammunition, 1,022 rounds in total, was reportedly found stashed in crocus bags and paint tins along with the gun and ballistic articles. In relation to the seized ballistic vest, which had the word 'police' written in white on the back, Williams-Martins said she was not sure if there were any distinguishable service numbers to link the vest to any particular individual.
