The country's tanker drivers are awaiting the outcome of a crucial meeting at the Ministry of Labour Thursday morning which will determine if they should again take industrial action. The National Workers Union (NWU) says if there is no positive word from petroleum haulage contractors concerning the payment of new and retroactive salaries to the drivers, there will be problems in the petroleum retail trade.Vincent Morrison, NWU President, says the drivers will begin taking action come next week."We'll be going to the Ministry this morning to get an update from the haulage contractors as to when the new rates, that is 8% in the first year and the retroactive payments will be made to the drivers. This morning's meeting is crucial because if we do not get proper information and a definite date as to when payments will be made, we could have some problems in the sector come next week."After the tanker drivers took strike action last month the union decided to give the contractors more time to finalise new payment rates with petroleum marketing companies.
