Prime Minister Bruce Golding says he will be addressing concerns raised by the Contractor General about the sale of the government's stake in the Sandals Whitehouse Hotel in Parliament on Tuesday. The hotel is to be sold that Gorstew Limited, a company controlled by Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, for US$40 million. Under the terms of the deal, Stewart will make a down payment of US$7.5 million and then receive a vendor's mortgage from the government for the remaining US$32.5 million. However, in a 22-page letter sent to Prime Minister Golding this week, Contractor General Greg Christie urged the government to halt the deal. In the letter, the OCG pointed to possible irregularity and impropriety in the proposed sale of the hotel. However, speaking with reporters yesterday at the opening of an MRI Unit at the Kingston Public Hospital, the prime minister maintained that there is nothing unpleasant about the deal. He maintains that the sale of the Sandals Whitehouse Hotel is to relieve the government of the property's huge debt. The OCG has launched a special probe into the controversial deal.
