Work on the new running track at the National Stadium restarted this morning following several weeks of delay because of the late arrival of the material from Germany. Major Desmond Brown, general manager of Independence Park Limited, the company that manages the facility, confirmed this morning that work has restarted on the track. Major Brown says workmen are now laying the base, which is the first of a three-step process in completing the installation of the new track. He further says the workmen should be on target to meet the new deadline for the installation of the track. Sports Minister Olivia 'Babsy' Grange said over a week ago that the new running track at the National Stadium would be fully installed by the end of February in order to avoid the cancellation of some of the major track and field events. A week before the minister's statement, the organising committee for the prestigious Gibson Relays had cancelled the one-day carnival due to the delay in the completion of the track. However, based on the commitment from the Minister, the organising committee of Gibson Relay has decided to stage the event. The meet has been held on the final Saturday of February since 1973. Minister Grange said her ministry would do everything in its power to complete installation by the end of February.
