A police Constable charged with shooting an 18 year old student during last year's State of Emergency in Spanish Town, St Catherine was offered $150,000 bail when he appeared before the Spanish Town Criminal Court on Tuesday.Constable Adrian McLaughlin is charged with wounding with intent, following an incident in which 18-year old Kemar Gordon was shot and injured. It is reported that on June 27, during last year's State of Emergency, Constable McLaughlin and other policemen received a call about gunmen in Job Lane, Spanish Town. The cops responded, and confronted a group of armed men. This led to a gun battle.Following the shooting, Kemar was found in the back of a yard with a gunshot wound to the back.He was taken to hospital, where he was treated. The 18-year old reported that he was among a group of students when he was shot by the police. However, defence attorney Peter Champagnie, is challenging his claim.During submissions on Tuesday, Mr. Champagnie argued that the 18-year old may have been shot during the cross fire between the police and the group of armed men.He questioned why the teen would be on the street at 9:00pm, during the State of Emergency. The Director of Public Prosecutions had ruled that Constable Mclaughlin be charged after ballistics tests revealed that the bullet that hit the teen was fired from his gun.He is scheduled to return to court on April 5.
