The police in Portland are optimistic that they can maintain the reputation as the safest parish.This is as statistics for January 2011 indicate that there has been an overall 67% reduction in violent crimes in the parish.According to the statistics, only six cases of serious crimes were committed in Portland in January 2011, compared with 18 in January 2010.The six cases included break-ins, carnal abuse and rape.There were no reports of shooting, felonious wounding or murders while there was a drop in 70% drop in robberies.Additionally, there have been no reported cases of violence in schools for January 2011 and January 2010 which the police credit to increased vigilance with additional time being visiting and counseling students at various institutions. Meanwhile, the police have been stepping up the development of community neighbourhood watch groups and continue to build strong networks with farmer to combat praedial larceny.Additionally, the traffic police will be maintaining a 24 hour road programme with speed checks and searches which have already been accredited for the zero road fatality rate for January 2011.
