Crime Stop, one of Jamaica's major crime fighting initiatives is reporting that more than $2 million was paid out last year as a result of the 1,436 calls it received from people with information about various crimes. The total payout of $2,368,500 in rewards was 30 per cent more than the amount paid out in 2009. The number of telephone calls also showed a 23 per cent increase over 2009. The agency says 41 per cent of those calls related to information about illegal guns and gunmen. Manager of Crime Stop Prudence Gentles attributes the increase in calls to the launch of the 311 TV show and the Tivoli incursion. Crime Stop says 51 illegal firearms and 1,214 rounds of ammunition were also recovered as a result of calls received. Crime Stop is also boasting that $94.6 million worth of Narcotics was also seized and destroyed last year as a result of calls received. That is a 120 per cent increase over 2009. Sixteen motor vehicles and a number of motor vehicle parts were also recovered last year.
