Vendors in the Jubilee Market in downtown Kingston are breathing a sigh of relief after being granted a two-month extension in the facility that is earmarked for refurbishing. Yesterday big smiles, loud laughs and the staccato blast from hammers underscored the mood as vendors patched up stalls they had recently dismantled in preparation for their move. The vendors had been given until January 31 to move out of the market located at the corner of West Queen and Orange streets in the heart of the market district. But in a meeting with Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie and other officials of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) on Wednesday, the deadline was extended until April 1."That reasonable still," said Cecelia Grant, who joined the carpenters in reconstructing her stall where she sells clothes."Me can work with the extension," added another vendor, Anthony Garrick."Now while we are here, we can tell we customers where we going to be after we move and give them we number to call we because the first time was too sudden," Garrick said.According to the vendors, they have been promised that some stalls would be made available on nearby Luke Lane while some persons would be accommodated in the Redemption Market."At least the mayor listen to we and we can work with him," said one vendor who on Tuesday was biting in her criticism of McKenzie while she packed her goods to move out of the facility. The KSAC has said the market, which was gutted by fire in 2003 and further damaged in January 2009, is to be completely overhauled later this year.
