GREENWOOD, St James -- President of the Montego Co-operative Credit Union and founder of the Good News Church of God, Bishop Herman Johnson died yesterday at the Falmouth Public Hospital after falling from a tree.He would have been 70 today. His daughter Lavonne Johnson-Earle told the Observer that her father died at about 11:00 am while undergoing emergency treatment.The Observer was told that about 7:30 am Bishop Johnson climbed an ackee tree -- which adjoins his premises at Greenwood -- and was in the process of trimming the branches when he lost his balance and fell. He reportedly sustained head injuries.Bishop Johnson was later taken by neighbours to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.When the Observer visited his residence yesterday, Johnson's wife Lelieth was said to be too traumatised to speak to the newspaper."She won't be able to speak to you; she is taking it very hard," Johnson-Earle said, adding that her mother was treated at the hospital following the tragedy.Last night, the board of directors and management of the Montego Co-operative Credit Union expressed their condolence to the family of Bishop Johnson, who had served as president of the credit union for just over two years.Along with Lelieth, Bishop Johnson also founded the Greenwood Preparatory School and the Good News Church of God with its headquarters in Adelphi, St James.He was also a long-standing Justice of the Peace for St James and an active member of several civic groups.Yesterday, he was remembered by his daughter as "an all-rounder; one who was always working to improve the lives of others, and a family man"."He was quite stern, but very frank," she added.Bishop Johnson is survived by wife Lelieth, daughter Lavonne and a granddaughter.
