The threat of industrial action by unionised technicians at the state-owned oil refinery Petrojam has been lifted. This follows an emergency meeting Friday, with representatives of Petrojam and the National Worker's Union (NWU), at the Ministry of Labour. On Thursday, the NWU served a 72-hour ultimatum on the refinery, after the technicians' demands for a salary increase as well as the payment of outstanding monies were not met.Managing Director of Petrojam, Winston Watson, told our news centre that the parties have agreed to consultation and dialogue, which have already started, in a bid to resolve the issue."We explained our position as well as the NWU explained their position and the ministry requested that they lift the strike notice which the union has agreed to and the ministry is going to be holding some consultations with various stakeholders and we have scheduled another meeting for the 15th of February," Mr. Watson said.In the meantime, he says the refinery is unable to grant a wage increase, at this time."The Union is asking for a salary increase and as you know there is a wage freeze going on and we cannot agree to a wage increase at this moment. [An agreement] is always possible, so long as we are talking there is a way out," Mr. Watson said.
