The lead counsel for the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) at the Manatt/Dudus Commission of Enquiry has come under fire from the Opposition People's National Party (PNP).The PNP says it is gravely concerned at what it sees as the "irresponsible actions" of Queens Counsel Frank Phipps, former JLP Chairman, in disclosing the identity and employment details of the wife of the former Commissioner of Police, Rear-Admiral Hardley Lewin, during Monday morning's sitting of the Enquiry at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston. The PNP is of the view that the line of questioning could be damaging, as it has potentially exposed the wife of the former Commissioner of Police to grave danger, given the sensitive nature of her employment.According to the Opposition, it views Mr. Phipp's actions as callous and insensitive and must be condemned. The party says it is also concerned about what appears to be the clear intent of the JLP to attack and call into question, the character of witnesses summoned in furtherance of the country's search for truth. The PNP argues that if this trend continues, the Manatt/Dudus Commission of Enquiry will only serve to impugn the character of dedicated public servants, and discourage others from serving in the national interest.
