The daughter of former St. Lucian Prime Minister Sir John Compton has resigned from the governing United Workers Party (UWP).Jeanine Compton-Antoine's decision is said to have ignited wide spread speculation about her political future. But UWP officials say the move was not unexpected because of what they have described as her growing ties to the Opposition Labour Party.Sources say publicly, officials of the UWP have been tightlipped about Mrs. Compton-Antoine's resignation but privately, some are breathing a sigh of relief as they say that an uncomfortable marriage of convenience is over. ...According to source, that marriage began when Sir John's daughter beat off four other contenders for who ran for the Micoud North seat that he left vacant in 2007.But since winning the seat, Mrs. Compton-Antoine has been critical of goings on in the governing both privately and publicly. The criticism includes this broadside against divisiveness in the UWP the Micoud North Member of Parliament issued at a zonal conference last year."You know what we are doing? We are dividing ourselves. At the last convention, I spoke about unity but maybe we should take off the United (in the UWP) because we not united. We are undermining each other left right and centre," Mrs. Compton-Antoine said. One senior UWP insider decision to quit at this time and not after the next election and possible cross the floor, is commendable. The UWP win the last general election in 2006 by an 11 to six majority.Political observers say Mrs. Compton-Antoine could be an independent or join the Opposition St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP).If she does, she will join former Prime Minister Dr. Vaughan Lewis, who left the UWP to join the SLP shortly before the last election.
