Private haulage contractors continued their protests Tuesday morning against what they say is huge increase in carriage license fees.The fee has been increased from $11,500 to $20,000.The haulage contractors, who have been protesting since Monday, moved their protest to the Transport Authority on Maxfield Avenue in Kingston on Tuesday. "Dem can't jump from $11,500 to $20,000. Things hard in Jamaica right now ... everything raise ... gas (price) gone up (and) parts (price) gone up. Teck some money from the tax on gas and put it towards the tax that you need ... you cant use us as the space goat," said one protesting truck driverHowever, officials of the Transport Authority said they were hearing of the drivers' concern for the first time.According to Daniel Dawes, Managing Director of the Transport Authority, a meeting will be held on Thursday to thrash out the issues. "We are open for discussion on any given matter as it relates to the Transport Authority. Unfortunately, we had not received a correspondent or any form of communicating in relation to this group, so we were taken by surprise by this protest. Nonetheless, we have met with the group and have advised that come Thursday at 2:00pm, the Transport Authority with its management team and members of the board will meet with this group to see how best we can bring this matter to an amicable conclusion," Mr. Dawes told RJR News.
