Scotiabank has donated $1.1 million to Food For the Poor to build a new house for Ms. Gheta Morgan and her 11 children in Spaulding Moravia District, Manchester. The total cost of the house is J$1.4 million. The Public Health department recently issued an eviction notice to Ms. Morgan and her children ages 3 to 25 years, after their accommodation was deemed a serious health hazard. Under the looming threat of homelessness, which was highlighted by TVJ on January 5, 2011, Food For the Poor made an urgent appeal for help to which Scotiabank responded. Today, volunteers from Food For the Poor and Scotiabank built a new house which containing 4 bedrooms, a living room, a bathroom and a kitchenette. The house will is equipped with an absorption pit, tanks with guttering for rain water collection, and a starter solar lighting system. Scotiabank, through its Bright Future Programme for Kids will also launch a staff campaign to raise funds and supplies to assist the children who are in school for a period of one year, while Food For the Poor, will also provide Ms. Morgan with the opportunity to start a business venture to sustain her family.
