The St. Elizabeth Health Department has ordered that alumina company ALPART demolish staff houses in the community of Nain in the parish which were constructed with asbestos material. Asbestos contains a cancer-causing substance. This demolition order comes just months after the health department ordered that the Bull Savanna Police Station in the parish be destroyed due to the presence of asbestos material. The ALPART houses were reportedly built in the 1960s to house the company's staff but were later abandoned. They have since been captured by squatters. Councillor of the Myersville division Richard Parchment is appealing for assistance for the occupants of the houses who he says have been living there undisturbed for over 30 years. He is requesting that ALPART subdivide the land and offer it to them for sale after the demolition has been completed.
