The Opposition People's National Party is raising concern about the absence of Audited Financial Statements since the Government acquired the St. Joseph's Hospital in 2008.In a release on Monday morning, Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Fenton Ferguson, claimed that the failure to submit annual returns since 2008 and the non-payment of statutory deductions for 2009 amounting to $17 million is confirmation of the state of the finances in many health institutions. The Opposition Spokesman also expressed concern that when the St. Joseph's Hospital was acquired in 2008, Health Minister, Rudyard Spencer spoke of the need to ease some of the pressure on the Kingston Public Hospital and also to develop a Centre of Excellence through private/public partnership. He said at the time, the Opposition, while being supportive in principle with the acquisition, had asked questions as it relates to cost. The Opposition had also questioned whether the acquisition was a bail out attempt.Dr. Ferguson ended his release by calling on the Health Minister to act swiftly to deal with the financial situation at St. Joseph's.He noted that the institution is now up for divestment and must be made viable for any such transition.
