Jamaica's Foreign Affairs minister Dr. Ken Baugh was today implicated at the Manatt- Dudus commission of enquiry by his former junior minister Dr. Ronald Robinson. Dr. Robinson, the only casualty of the Manatt affair so far, testified that Dr. Baugh was not truthful when he told Parliament the junior minister paid his own expenses for trips to Washington to deal with the Christopher 'Dudus' Coke extradition. Dr. Robinson made the revelation under cross examination by PNP attorney KD Knight during the morning session of the enquiry, probing the hiring of the US law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips to block the extradition of alleged crime lord Christopher 'Dudus' Coke. It was on May 11 last year that Dr. Baugh told Parliament that Dr. Robinson paid his own expenses for trips to Washington to deal with the Christopher 'Dudus' Coke extradition. That was six months after Dr. Robinson returned from his second trip. According to Dr. Robinson, on the first occasion, he was en route to London for a Diaspora conference. But he said while travelling through Washington he and attorney Harold Brady met with former US Government official Frank Fahrenkopf. Brady was the middle man between Manatt and purportedly the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). Dr. Robinson said it was Fahrenkopf who referred them to the US law firm Manatt Phelps and Phillips. Dr. Robinson and Brady would make a second trip to Washington to meet with Manatt. But Dr. Robinson says like he did on the first occasion his second visit was in his capacity as state minister. He also said when he returned he submitted the invoice for his trip to the minister with responsibility for information and JLP deputy treasurer, Daryl Vaz. Under cross examination by PNP attorney KD Knight, Dr. Robinson said Dr. Baugh was wrong to have told Parliament that it was a private visit and that he had paid his own airfare and accommodation. Dr. Robinson also said he decided to resign in May last year after learning that it was the JLP which paid for his travel. Dr. Robinson said that made him very uncomfortable. This morning Dr. Robinson agreed with KD Knight that the Prime Minister Bruce Golding made a mistake by failing to advise Parliament that he instructed him to go to Washington to meet with Manatt representatives.
