The state minister with responsibility for local government, Robert Montague has indicated that the administration will be moving to hold parish council elections in the four divisions now without representation. They are the Duncans, Trelawny, Norbrook, St Andrew, Frankfield, Clarendon and Spanish Town divisions. Montague made the disclosure in Parliament a short while ago while moving for the postponement of the overall local government elections. This is the third time the administration is seeking to put off the local government elections. According to Montague the government needs more time to implement elements of local government reform and to finalise the establishment of Portmore as the fifteenth parish. He also says the Statistical Institute of Jamaica has raised concern that any electioneering at this time will affect the imminent Census collection. But, Montague says the Government will still be moving to hold the elections in the four divisions currently without representation. However, the opposition says parish council polls should be held no later than March 31 this year. According to the Opposition spokesman on Local Government, Colin Fagan the administration is employing dilatory tactics.
