The historic town of Falmouth in Trelawny on Thursday morning welcomed 3,000 cruise passengers at its newly opened Pier.Officials say the majority of the passengers disembarked the megaliner, 'Voyager of the Seas', which is unprecedented. Both Culture Minister Olivia Grange and Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett say the opening and arrival got off to a seamless start.Passengers disembarked to a pier that is still a work in progress, but this was overshadowed by the artisan village displays, cultural entertainment packages and historic rides such as tram cars and horse and carriage.Minister Grange says come March 22 when the largest megaliner and luxury cruise 'Oasis of the Seas' arrives the cultural experience should be even greater. In the meantime, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has sought to assure tourism players that the Falmouth Pier will not affect cruise arrivals at the country's other ports. He emphasized that negotiations are well underway with major cruise operators to ensure that all the piers benefit adding that a record 1.3 million cruise passengers are expected to arrive this year compared with just over 900,000 last year.
