The authorities have made a major dent in the illicit cigarette trade. The Customs Department is reporting that it has seized J$120 million worth of counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes.A statement from the Department said four million sticks of the fake cigarettes were found in a 20 foot container which originated in China.It was seized at Kingston Container Terminal.The counterfeit cigarettes were originally declared as plastic and styrofoam cups and plates.The Customs Department says the trading of counterfeit cigarettes is a breach of the Trade Marks Act as well as the Copyright Act.It adds that counterfeit cigarettes, although cheaper, pose a serious health risk as the contents are unregulated. Carreras commends the Customs Department Meanwhile, Carreras Limited, the country's only manufacturer of cigarettes, has commended the Jamaica Customs department on the seizure of the 20 foot container with 4 million sticks of counterfeit cigarettes.In a statement, Carreras says this find of counterfeit cigarettes would have resulted in a potential loss of revenue to the government of over $70 million resulting from the requisite duty and taxes being evaded. Carreras added in its statement that it is confident that the Customs Department will continue its vigorous efforts to clamp down on the presence of illicit cigarettes in the Jamaican Market and will work in conjunction with the relevant regulatory authorities to prosecute persons found dealing in this illegal activity. According to the company, this latest seizure by the Customs Department highlights the concern that it has been publicly raising about the illicit trade in cigarettes.According to Carreras there has been a surge in the quantities of illegal cigarettes that have been confiscated or seized by either the Jamaica Constabulary Force or the Customs Department.
