The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced plans to take the issue of the poor treatment of Jamaicans in CARICOM states to a high level meeting involving regional leaders.Dr Ken Baugh, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, says the matter will be raised at the Community Council meeting of CARICOM next week. The Community Council is CARICOM's second highest decision-making body. The move follows allegations by a Jamaican woman that she was mistreated by immigration officials during a trip to Barbados two weeks ago.According to Dr Baugh, although there are other regional issues on the agenda, the treatment of Jamaicans will be added to the list."This is something that we have discussed ... it is not necessarily Barbados but in the Caribbean. It's a very topical issue at all our meetings at COTED (Council for Trade and Economic Development) as well as COFCOR (Council on Foreign and Community Relations) and I'm going to raise this at the Community Council meeting in Belize next week," said Dr. Baugh who was on RJR's daily current affairs discussion programme Beyond the Headlines Friday evening.Senator Dwight Nelson, the Minister of National Security, has written to Public Defender, Earl Witter, asking him to intervene in the issue surrounding the reported abuse of Jamaican, Shanique Myrie. It has been alleged that Ms. Myrie was deported from Barbados following demeaning cavity searches by a female officer. The Government will also be investigating claims of Jamaicans being mistreated in Trinidad and Tobago.
