Government is seeking the details of the business deal announced by telecommunications providers Oceanic (Claro) and Digicel so that the agencies regulating the telecommunications and commercial sectors can play their role in ensuring fairness and transparency.Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Daryl Vaz, made this disclosure in response to a question from a journalist at a post cabinet press briefing recently."I am in consultations with the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) and the Fair Trading Commission (FTC). I have also instructed that they meet with Digicel and Claro to get a better understanding of what is the basis of the deal, because up until now, we don't know, and those consultations will continue. It is a commercial arrangement, and therefore obviously we would not want the government to drag its feet. But there has to be a level of due diligence done and I am hoping that in short order we can get to the stage of where a decision can be made," Minister Vaz said.Minister Vaz said that the Information and Communications Telecommunications (ICT) policy will provide direction in addressing commercial arrangements within that industry.
