The police commissioner has explained his decision to extend the contract of Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields for another three months.
The commissioner, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin says DCP Shields has been leading a number of protracted investigations, (come on now - arent they ALL overly protracted?) including the enquiry into the disappearance of Kemar Walters and Oliver Duncan on December 23, 2004 from Washington Boulevard in St Andrew and two other cases.
Commissioner Lewin says DCP Shields was asked to stay on for another three months in the interest of continuity and to ensure that these cases are satisfactorily completed.
DCP Shields’ contract with the force as the deputy commissioner in charge of crime expired in February, but he was given a three month extension until May 31.
The latest extension means he will now stay on until the end of August.
Commissioner Lewin says his request is awaiting formal approval by the Police Service Commission.
He says his decision will not alter plans to realign senior management responsibilities within the force.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington now has overall command of operations and crime.
