HEDONISM ADS NO LONGER RUNNING ON PLAYBOY TV, SAYS ISSA
Deposition continues in Florida court
Sunday, July 12, 2009
SUPERCLUBS chairman, John Issa, continuing his deposition in a lawsuit he filed in a Florida Court, refuted an e-mail claim that the Hedonism hotel brand "cheapens Jamaica's image", and that its "sleezy ad campaigns" constantly played on Playboy TV.
ISSA... they may be sexual, but they're not.sleezy is a matter of opinion
Issa is maintaining that his reputation was damaged in defamatory e-mails originating in Florida, United States, over which he filed the lawsuit in the Circuit Court of the 11th Judicial Circuit in and for Miami-Dade County.
The hotelier's deposition was taken late January this year but the transcript of the proceedings was only recently obtained by the Sunday Observer.
In answer to questions from attorney Harley Tropin, who represents the defendants, Issa quoted the e-mail as saying: "Many believe that your Hedonism brand cheapens Jamaica's image, and its sleezy ad campaigns constantly playing on Playboy TV."
Tropin asked Issa if he thought that was defamatory and he responded: "Well, it said it damaged Jamaica's image."
Tropin: "My question is, do you think that's defamatory to you?"
Issa: "Yes."
Tropin: "Why?"
Issa: "Because I don't cheapen Jamaica's image."
Tropin: "Do you think your ad campaigns are sleezy?"
Issa: "No. They may be sexual, but they're not.sleezy is a matter of opinion."
Tropin: "Do they constantly play on Playboy TV?"
Issa: "Not constantly. There have been.there have been floods of ads on Playboy TV during some past years. There are none running now."
The SuperClubs boss said that he was also accused in the e-mails of "paying prostitutes, and of having a company that encourages and pays prostitutes". He described that as "defamatory".
Tropin: "Well, let's stop there. Have prostitutes come to the resorts?"
Issa: "I don't know. It says I encourage it. I don't encourage and sometimes pay prostitutes to come to my resorts. I don't do that."
Later in the deposition, Tropin asked: "Well, you might know if, for example, prostitutes have been arrested at your hotels. Have they?"
Issa: "I don't know of any case."
Tropin: "You might know if your hotel managers have told you that prostitutes come to the hotel. Have they?"
Issa: "No."
Tropin: "Would it come as a shock to you that prostitutes are at the Hedonism hotel?"
Issa's attorney interjected.
