Labour Ministry to make advance payments to shafted farm workers
Monday, 08 March 2010
The Ministry of Labour will be making advance payments to farmers under the Canadian Farm Work programme who have been unable to access funds deducted as compulsory savings.
The farmers complained to RJR News on the weekend that the money, which was due since late last year, has not been forthcoming and they have been unable to get answers from the Labour Ministry.
On Monday morning Labour Minister Pearnel Charles told RJR News the delay in payments stems from the bankruptcy of one employer and the tardiness of another.
He says as a result the Ministry has decided to pick up the slack.
"However the Ministry of Labour invites any worker who did not get any money as a result of these two employers who have gotten into difficulty to visit the Ministry of Labour. It is proposed that we will advance the money to them since under the Canadian laws we will collect that money sometime later any such worker should visit the Ministry of Labour on Wednesday at my office at 11 o'clock and I will deal with the matter," Mr. Charles said.
