AS of March 30, there were 58 consultants/advisers employed to the government at a cost of $119.3 million per annum.
In parastatal entities, including the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and Jampro, 57 consultant/advisors were employed, at the same time, at a cost of an additional $90.7 million.
This was revealed in a ministry paper tabled in the House of Representatives on Wednesday by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.
The Ministry of National Security increased its pool of advisors from five to 10, while the former Ministry of Land and the Environment took on three consultants/advisors for the first time last year.
The ministry paper said that those employed in the Ministry of National Security were engaged in several areas, including intelligence, legal advice to the head of the Counter Narcotics Task Force, information technology, community safety, and general administration.
Those taken on by the Ministry of Land and the Environment were engaged with national integrated chemicals, waste management and land management.
In the parastatal sector, 16 of the consultants were employed to NEPA and 10 in the fiscal services. The ministry paper said that 14 of those employed to NEPA were engaged in the production of development orders for the parishes of Portland and Trelawny.
PM Simpson Miller has promised to keep the House advised on the status of the matter via annual filings of ministry papers.
