A gas well in Wayne County, Mississippi blew out Thursday night, causing area evacuations but not injuring anyone, a federal incident report said.
The blowout occurred at an Escambia Operating Company well at about 7:15 pm Thursday as crews ran tubing during a workover operation, according to Todd Johnson, vice president of environmental health and safety for the company.
A handful of families in the Chicora area were evacuated as hydrogen sulfide gas continued to escape the well on Friday, according to the National Response Center and the local Wayne County News.
The company brought in equipment Friday to run a kill operation Saturday during daylight.
"Fingers crossed, we’ll get it shut in tomorrow," Johnson told Upstream late Friday afternoon. "If Plan A fails, we're ready to go with Plan B."
Johnson did not have an immediate estimate of the volume or flow rate of the gas, but said it was an older well whose output had declined over time.
