Dear All
Greetings from the UK!
Been a long time lurking. Having just been back to JA for Grandmother's funeral this week after a decade away. I wanted to share a few thoughts about MTW having also read their strategic plans in the light of my visit. The Half Way Tree Transportation Hubs (which I saw) was a vast improvement and was necessary, who can remember the chaos at the clocktower back in the day? The Downtown one however, seems to be more questionable!
I did not travel on the toll road though at six miles it seemed a pretty decent road, just that people's complaints is that toll booths are too close together!
However, my main concerns come from the observation of Bog Walk Gorge. I cannot understand why infrastructure development has not started there with all the planning done (even Mt Rosser to Moneague takes precedence!). The Gorge is shut numerous times each year and is a major North/South Connector and yet there seems no bypass development around this road that has been subjected to environmental problems for many years? I am puzzled by this as surely this costs everybody more economically. There is no mention of this in the strategic plan???
Secondly, the airport at Kingston. I am not convinced that NMIA on the Pallisadoes Spit should get further development and it really is time for Vernamfield to be the International Airport. On a purely risk-evaluative nature - it would gain a better return and is well cited in the relation to the Highway (Just needs a spur road to connect. I wonder whether others had any thoughts.
I think these two issues are really pressing for the next decade and needs some political will. I do think the case for both is much more robust than some of the other stuff that has been done. The economic benefits would be far more beneficial.
As for the roads in Northern Clarendon and the border with St Ann. Woeful and major accidents waiting to happen as cars swerve which will cause more children to be at risk of fatality. It was a great disappointment to see things had gotten worse and not better since my last visit.
The political will and strategic planning needs to be there in relation to MTW. There are thumbs up for a few things but I do think the two highlighted are National as part of economic development priorities and need to be apolitical.
Be great to see these two projects move before the next 10 years and completed before Jamaica60!
One Love!
