Significant changes made to JLP conference
Thursday, 08 November 2007
Significant changes are being made to the annual conference of the Jamaica Labour Party.
The first of the two-day conference is scheduled for this instead of next weekend.
The JLP business session will be shifted from its customary venue to four locations across the island.
The JLP yearly confab is customarily held at the National Arena over a two day period.
But this time around, it will be held over one-week.
The private or business session will take place this weekend in the four Area Councils.
"We will be having the seasons in a more concentrated way in each of the respective area councils and then next week, we go to our public seasons which will be at its usual location, the National Arena," said JLP General Secretary, Karl Samuda.
Mr. Samuda said the party is not likely to be faced with any internal elections at this time as it prepares for Local Government Elections.
"We feel that it is more concentrated approach that where deputy leaders have specific responsibility for areas under his or her charge," he said.
On the matter of local government election, Mr. Samuda said, "I am not anticipating any elections this year, we have just come out of a very challenging election exercise and I think we need time to settle as a party and to ensure that we are in this thing for the duration."
However, sources say financial constraints have forced the JLP to change its plans after spending millions on the General Elections.
According to sources, this is the main reason the party is concentrating its dwindling resources on the public session.
